This oil painting on canvas shows a highly theatrical scene depicting Oliver Cromwell and a Halbadeer storming Basing House. It is set at night and the room is lit by the light of a torch that is carried by one of the men beseiging the castle. The whole is painted in sombre tones and the darkness of the scene hides the faint traces of a servant fleeing in the background. In the foreground the patient and stoical seated royalist, dressed in black, awaits the attack.
