The school was unique as a teacher training institution because of its focus on handicraft. It was created to improve the standards of those teaching in London’s manual training centers.
In 1907 the college moved from South London to Hoxton, and in 1951 from Hoxton to a semi-rural location at Cooper's Hill in Surrey.
The college continued to funded by the London County Council at it's new site, which consisted of 60 acres of land, and overlooked the Thames and Windsor Castle.
