This bootjack made of cast iron has the shape of a large may-bug.
The boot to take off was to be put in between the beetle’s antlers, whereas with the other foot one stepped on to the beetle’s body to finally get the boot off.
Its extraordinary shape and decoration reflects mid Victorian taste for decorating even basic household objects.
