Full image caption

Mid 17th-century brass candlestick. It has 2 holes in the top of the holder and a rim at the bottom to catch the wax. Wax candles were expensive at this time so many people commonly used tallow (animal fat) candles which gave off an inferior, flickering light and smelled bad.

1640 AD - 1670 AD
