The church of St John's was built in 1824 to celebrate the victory in the Napoleonic wars. In 1940, the church was firebombed, destroying much of the interior. A restored St John's Waterloo reopened in 1951 to serve as the parish church of the Festival of Britain. Recently, it has been restored.
