The Terminal Building now called Airport house was built and opened in 1928 and was the world's first purpose designed air terminal. It is a fine example of 1920's - 1930's Art Deco building.
Croydon was the first airport in the world to introduce air traffic control, in 1921. It was the main airport for London before it was replaced by Northolt Aerodrome, London Heathrow Airport and London Gatwick Airport. When war was declared in September 1939, Croydon Airport was closed to civil aviation. It played a vital role as a fighter station during the Battle of Britain and was attacked in the first major raid over the London area.
