PLA tackles river pollution, July 1950. Silting, sewage, industrial and electrical plants all created river pollution and raised water temperatures. Here, Mr Leonard Betts, River Purification Officer takes a sample for investigation. Hot water can be a danger to health, through raising the general temperature of the river and encouraging growth of the more harmful bacteria. If the hot water itself is impure the danger is even greater. Photograph: Central Office of Information D.51244
