The Suffrage Atelier designed this pro-female suffrage propaganda poster. The atelier was founded in London in February 1909. Its aim was: ‘to encourage Artists to forward the Women’s Movement, and particularly the Enfranchisement of Women, by means of pictorial publications.’
The image represents the disadvantaged position of women who work in sweated industries but do not have the right to vote. Female workers are shown suffering ‘in the shadows’ without rights or representation. By contrast, government is shown as the place of dealings between the king and enfranchised men.
