Covent Garden Piazza and Market. Oil on canvas. This painting shows a view of the piazza and market looking west towards the church of St Paul's, Covent Garden and its symmetrically placed flanking gateways and houses. On the right there are the Northern blocks of Inigo Jones's houses, with their stuccoed arcades, popularly called 'piazzas'. Beyond is a mansion with carefully integrated architecture, as the string courses demonstrate. On the left, there are early Queen Anne houses. Numerous carts, a sedan chair in use, a coach and a sedan chair awaiting custom are shown.
