This photograph shows a gap through Leinster Gardens, Bayswater, where two houses were demolished in the construction of the Metropolitan District Railway from Paddington to Blackfriars via Kensington, Westminster and the Victoria Embankment. Once the tunnel was complete, a façade of mock houses were erected to match the rest of terrace. This is one of a series of 64 images captured by the photographer Henry Flather who was commissioned to record the construction of the underground railway between 1866 and 1868.
