This photograph was taken at Crystal Palace. In 1956 London Transport recruited for transport workers in Barbados. They lent their new employees the fare to Britain and the Barbadians repaid the money from their wages. In 1966 London Transport sought more employees in Jamaica and Trinidad. Several thousand West Indians arrived in Britain to take jobs as bus and train drivers, conductors and ticket sellers.
