Before the First World War branches of Woolworth's opened in Croydon, Peckham, Woolwich, Harlesden and Brixton. This branch, at 100-104 Kilburn High Road, was trading by the early 1920s. The shops were a huge success and the business thrived during the 1920s and 30s. By 1950, there were a 762 Woolworth's stores in the U.K. boasting the popular slogan 'Nothing in these stores over sixpence'.
