'O the roast beef of old England, & C.' or 'The gate of Calais'. In one corner there's Hogarth's own portrait with the soldier's hand upon his shoulder. A friar is set as being very interested in the piece of vast sirloin of beef in the centre of the scene. This engraving is on page 71 of the book: 'The Works of William Hogarth' from the original plates restored by James Heath, published in 1822. The original painting 'The Gates of Calais' was painted in 1748.
