Marriage a La mode - Plate 1. One of six plates first published in 1745. This engraving introduces a noble earl, who dispalys his genealogical tree, the root of which is 'William Duke of Normandy, the duke of England. The scene is set at the house of Lord Squanderfield, his clear lack of funds is to be rectified by the impending marriage of his son to a wealthy merchant's daughter. From 'The Works of William Hogarth' from the original plates restored by James Heath, published in 1822.
