Full length portrait of Sir Mancherjee Merwanjee Bhownaggree, KCIE, MP, from the 'Men of the Day' series, No. 691, Vanity Fair by Leslie Ward (Spy). Bhownaggree was born in India, the son of a Parsi merchant. He moved to England in 1882 to work as a lawyer. A member of the Conservative Party, Bhownaggree was elected as MP for Bethnal Green from 1895-1906. He was the second Indian to become a British MP. Bhownaggree was a strong supporter of British rule in India and was ridiculed by his opponents who nicknamed him 'Bow-the-knee'. However, he was also actively involved in the welfare and education of Indian students in London and lobbied Parliament on the issue of rights for Indian subjects.
