The royal coach, in which the new king George III and his queen are depicted as a Lion and Lioness, has met an accident and the driver and his companion are thrown headlong. The driver is Lord Bute, the king's cultivated but inexperienced Scottish prime minister, and his companion is the dowager princess of Wales, the king's mother. His closeness to the princess led to Bute being scurrilously compared by his enemies to Roger de Mortimer, the lover of Isabella, mother of Edward III.
