Manchester, 1851. Great Exhibition fever took Britain by storm in the summer of 1851. In Cruikshank's satirical view, Manchester which was Britain's fourth largest city after London, Liverpool and Glasgow, is deserted. Although itself a centre of British industry, its citizens have fled to visit the 'Great Exhibition of Industry' in London.
