Sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens are displayed at the Duveen Gallery in the British Museum. Lord Elgin brought the artworks, often referred to as the 'Elgin Marbles', to Britain in 1817. Their presence at the British Museum has been controversial since they arrived: some argue that they should be returned to Greece. During the Second World War the marbles were placed in a disused part of the London Underground for protection. The restored Duveen Gallery was opened in 1962.
