This Gamba employee is pleating the uppers of ballet shoes. Luigi Gamba founded the company in 1903. He had come to Britain from Italy at the age of 14 and worked as a waiter at the Savoy Hotel. He opened a dance shoe shop in Covent Garden that made pointe ballet shoes among others. Gamba designed and supplied ballet shoes to Anna Pavlova and Nijinsky.
