Full image caption

Carlton Club no 8. An ink and wash drawing of a design for the frontage of the Carlton Club. It is possibly by Sydney Smirke, brother of Sir Robert. The latter designed premises in Pall Mall for the club, founded in 1832, which his brother extended in the 1840s but which were demolished in 1854. This may, however, be an early design for the 1854 premises which Sydney Smirke and George Basevi designed.
