A Rake's Progress, plate I. The wealthy bourgeois tries to rape the aristocratic rake. In this plate, the allusion to seduction and abandoment of a girl with Rakewell trying to buy off her mother is suggested. Rakewell's dead father appears in portrait over the fireplace and the room is being hung in black to show mourning. Taken from 'The Works of William Hogarth' published 1822.
