Full image caption

Pair of cased verge watches with plain gold inner case. The outer case is horn and reverse-painted on the underside with a port scene in a floral border. The windows of the house and the bows of the vessels are highlighted in gold, as is the inner border. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals. The watch on the left has an outer case of gilded brass and horn painted with mossy decoration to imitate Chinese or Japanese lacquer with two gilded butterflies on the back. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals and gold hands. Expensive watches with elaborate gold cases were made and finished by highly skilled craftsmen based mostly in Clerkenwell. Some had borders picked out in different-coloured golds.
