Two women, walking in Sutton High Street. These two women look formally dressed, though the two-piece suit and gloves were not reserved only for smart occasions. Day dress or skirt lengths were to just below the knee or mid-calf. The fitted cloche hats of the 1920s had given way to wider brims, and were often worn tilted to one side and held in place by elastic under the hair. The unknown photographer who captured this image used a 35-millimetre camera, and produced hundreds of photos of individuals walking along Sutton High Street. The photographer usually waited until the subject became aware of the camera before seizing the portrait.
