Two men, walking in Sutton High Street. In the 1930s, menswear became more informal than previous decades had allowed. Both these men are wearing lounge suits complete with waistcoats and wide trousers, fashionably turned up at the hem. The morning suit was reserved for the most formal occasions, and the bowler hat for business. Flat caps and trilby hats, as shown here, were common for street wear and leisure. The unknown photographer who captured this image used a 35-millimetre camera, and produced hundreds of photos of individuals walking along Sutton High Street. The photographer usually waited until the subject became aware of the camera before seizing the portrait.
