Postman, Sutton High Street. In the early 1930s, postmen wore a dark blue uniform with red piping on the trousers. The 'shako' peaked cap, with a badge on the front declaring 'General Post Office', was replaced in 1932 by a flat peaked cap. The unknown photographer who captured this image used a 35-millimetre camera, and produced hundreds of photos of individuals walking along Sutton High Street. The photographer usually waited until the subject became aware of the camera before seizing the portrait.
