Man, Sutton High Street. The morning suit was reserved for the most formal occasions and the bowler hat for business. Flat caps, as shown here, and trilby hats were common for street wear and leisure and were worn by working-class men for their 'best' dress. The unknown photographer who captured this image used a 35-millimetre camera, and produced hundreds of photos of individuals walking along Sutton High Street. The photographer usually waited until the subject became aware of the camera before seizing the portrait.
