'Waitress race', Fitzrovia community festival. To the amusement of the local crowd, a 'waitress race' takes place in the street as part of the Fitzrovia community festival. The annual festival began in 1973 under the slogan 'The People Live Here'. It was organised by the Charlotte Street Association in response to Middlesex Hospital's plans for redevelopment in the area. This 1974 festival included a grand parade led by the band of the Middlesex Yeomanry, Morris dancing and children's entertainment.
