'Danse des Negres dans L'Isle De St. Dominique. A Negroes Dance in the Island of St. Dominica' by L. C. Ruotte.
This aquatint depicts the exterior scene of colourfully dressed men, women and a child who dance to a drum and tambourine rhythm. The background of a building and coconut palm trees can be seen on the left. European observers frequently recorded the enthusiastic social activity and brightly coloured Sunday dress of enslaved and free Africans in the colonies. However, such gatherings helped enslaved people to re-forge social networks and cultural identity which slavery had tried to eradicate.
