Le Culte des Negres (The Worship of the negroes). Etching. Exterior scene of a village in a forest with palm trees, huts constructed from wood, straw roofs. African men and women are depicted dressed in cloth skirts, wearing beaded necklaces and earrings, and small children are naked. Some men offer fruit and worship an statue of a horned man. The animals depicted include chickens, a pig and an elephant. An idyllic view where the scene implies fertility and plenty with food and children in happy abundance. The view fits with mid-18th century ideas of Africa as a lost 'Eden'.
