An etching of The City of Loango. The African kingdom of Loango lay in what is now the Republic of Congo, and thrived between the 15th–19th centuries. Like many African city-states, Loango was a centre of sophisticated culture and trade. By the 19th century its culture had been largely destroyed by European intervention and the slave trade.
