Negroes Washing for Diamonds in Brazil. An engraving published July 29, 1815 by Thomas Kelly of Paternoster Row, London. A row of black men is working with tools in a stream, under a canopy, watched by seated overseers holding whips. The Portuguese were major slave traders, and African labour was vital to the gold and diamond mines in Brazil.
