Full image caption

View on the Regents Canal looking towards Hampstead. As well as being a gifted artist, Cornelius Varley spent much of his life working as a maker of scientific instruments. He invented an optical aid for artists called the graphic telescope, which he used to sketch landscapes as accurate records rather than in the stylised manner of many of his contemporaries.
