London and Birmingham Railway: building Stationary Engine House. Early railways were constructed with the muscle power of horses and men. This lithograph shows gangs of labourers working in teams supervised by subcontracted engineers and foremen. Railway labourers were usually itinerant workers who moved from site to site. They often lived and slept beside the railway tracks on which they worked. Lithograph.
