Depiction of Lord Nelson lying in state in the painted chamber at Greenwich Hospital. After his death at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, Nelson's body was brought home in the Victory and lay in state in the Painted Hall. The Upper Hall, was draped in black and hung with sconces and heraldic shields.
