The mining exhibits, Great Exhibition, 1851. Chromolithograph. 'Minerals and mining' were one of the classes within the 'raw materials' category. Large objects such as columns of coal from the South Yorkshire coal fields were exhibited outside the hall. Inside were displays of metals, mineral fuels, mining apparatus, building materials, geological specimens and gems. Visitors were introduced to methods of extracting and processing the raw materials and shown the advantage these natural resources offered British industry.
