The Avenue, looking south. One of a portfolio of nine lithographs of Bedford Park, Turnham Green - London's first garden suburb (1875-81). In the 1870s Norman Shaw built this large residential estate in Turnham Green, near the new District underground railway in west London. With gabled 'Queen Anne'-style houses fronting onto gently curving tree-lined streets, it was popular among the intellectual middle classes and an inspiration for the garden suburbs of the early 20th century.
