Chelsea Pensioners with a view of the Hospital. Hand coloured engraving loosely based on David Wilkie's famous painting, commissioned by the Duke of Wellington: Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Despatch (1822). Here, however, the presence of two central peg-legged pensioners places greater emphasis on the damaging effects of war. At the end of the wars with France, the battle scars, disabilities and impoverishment of many of the discharged sailors and soldiers were a common sight for Londoners.
