Full image caption

Queen Victoria Enthroned. Etching. The Queen is depicted on top of the globe against a background of ships' masts, signifying Britain's naval power. Below her are representations of people from many of the countries within the British Empire, most of them upside down. A group of men wearing turbans smoke a hookah, while camel riders in robes traverse the desert. A snake charmer plays his flute and a slave owner wields his whip over a line of slaves chained together. At the bottom is a group of pagodas.
