Ice in London's Western Dock. John Avery photographed this icy scene in the Western Dock during the cold February of 1917. Tugboats, barges and lightermen crowd the water alongside the Danish ship Nachristensen. The Western Dock had only recently been redeveloped in 1914 with a new concrete jetty, two-storey transit sheds and a widened Tobacco Dock passage between the Western and Eastern Docks. Wool, tobacco and wine were the principal cargoes handled in London Docks.
