Millwall firefighters on strike. United Kingdom firefighters went on strike for nine weeks from the 14 December 1977 leaving the army's 'Green Goddesses' to step in. The workers were demanding a 30% increase in their weekly pay of ?71.10, which was below the national average. A hospital fire in Bow, which firefighters did attend, and the fire-related deaths of two children also in London contributed to a settlement being reached that included a 10% pay-rise.
