Boat Builders. Inside the Greaves' Boatyard, by Lindsay Wharf. From his Cheyne Walk yard, the boat builder Charles Greaves 'let boats on a landing stage above Battersea Bridge.' He served a number of local artists, including Holman Hunt and Turner. Greaves had instructions from the painter John Martin to ring his doorbell 'if there were any good clouds and a good moon'. Charles Greaves' sons Walter (1846-1930) and Henry (1844-1904) were both modest painters. They were accustomed to artists being among their neighbours and customers.
