The cobbled courtyard outside Old Tabard Inn, High Street, Southwark. Watercolour. Old Tabard Inn was the inn that Chaucer's Pilgrims began their journey from. In this nineteenth century view the inn is shown with a number of merchants and warehouses occupying its premises. John Jacobs, Skin Merchants, Ind Coope and Co. brewery and the General Railway and Shipping office can be seen. A group of men stands in the sunshine, outside the pub, talking, while another carries a basket off towards the brewery. There are a number of parked carts, some scratching chickens and a couple of milk pails.
