The scene depicted is meant to take place shortly after the execution of the King on 30 January 1649. Most Victorian historians recounted the unlikely episode of Cromwell sitting up with the King's coffin. This is a reduced copy of a painting by Delaroche, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831 and in London in 1850.
