Gateway of St Bartholomew-the-Great Church, Smithfield. The 16th-century timbered house above the gateway had been rediscovered only a decade or so before George Davison Reid took this photo. A First World War zeppelin raid in 1916, then a fire in 1917 in the adjoining warehouse of Evans & Sons, Lescher & Webb, caused tiles covering the facade to dislodge. The building was then revealed.
