St Clement Danes tower with a cattle trough in the foreground. George Davison Reid took this photo from the 19th-century memorial to Prime Minister Gladstone. The Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association provided the granite water trough. Many such troughs were dotted around London. Some had three tiers: the lowest for cats and dogs, the middle for horses and the top at the side for people. Once motor vehicles had replaced horses, many of the troughs were removed. Some were re-used as flower-beds.
