New terraced housing and two old tower blocks, Holly Street Estate. Built in 1966-71 for Hackney Borough Council, the Holly Street estate originally included four tower blocks and provided 1,145 homes. By the 1990s, much of the estate faced demolition. At the time this photo was taken, two tower blocks had been replaced by new terraced housing. One remaining tower, seen on the right of the photo, was refurbished as sheltered housing for the elderly. The other was subsequently demolished. The photo was shown as part of an exhibition focusing on estates and social housing, Tower Blocks: Love Them or Loath Them, held at the Museum of London in 1999.
