Exhibition at the Royal Academy, London. This watercolour depicts the Great Room at Somerset House during the Royal Academy exhibition of 1828. The room was traditionally reserved for the largest and most important paintings. Among them, in this exhibition are a number of full length portraits by the President, Sir Thomas Lawrence. While the visitors here are dressed in a respectable manner, the social diversity of the actual crowd is indicated by the Academy's regular payment of a Bow Street constable to keep the peace. The watercolour show Benjamin Vulliamy's 'Great Lamp' in the centre of the room.
