A Tennis Party at Burroughs Lodge, Hendon, 1887. A watercolour painting by H.G. Stormont.
Large suburban dwellings with extensive grounds were the preserve of wealthier members of society. Houses such as Burroughs Lodge, the home of Mr and Mrs J. Crawford Bromehead, had spacious gardens well-suited for summer parties. Lawn tennis, fashionable from the 1870s, and croquet were unusual in that both men and women could play together. Burroughs Lodge stood in what is now Station Road; it was demolished after WW1.
