Commemorative Banner. Blue silk banner depicting the jury of the Calthorpe Street inquest 1833/1834. This banner was made to commemorate the jury's verdict of justifiable homicide at the inquest into PC Robert Culley's death at the Calthorpe Street disturbance. The central portrait is of the foreman of the jury, Samuel Stockton, surrounded by the other jurymen. Stockton, later a churchwarden and vestryman, clearly believed that the police had acted unlawfully in breaking up the meeting. Although the Court of King's Bench later overturned the jury's verdict, it failed to pronounce a judgement of wilful murder.
