Full image caption

Green silk self striped spencer. Named after the 2nd Earl Spencer who popularised a similar jacket ending at waist level, the spencer could be worn indoors or out. Usually made from coloured silk, and decorated with piping, frogging - military style braiding, or tassels, it created a livley contrast to the simple high waisted muslin dresses.
